At ID Project, Wood and Steel Factory, we believe that woodworking begins in the life of a tree. In every tree, there are two distinct sections that form the trunk; a light coloured layer circles a darker harder core.

The outer, light coloured section is called sapwood. There, water and sap flow from the roots through the sapwood which act as the arteries that feed the growth of the tree.

The core, darker section of the trunk is the heartwood which acts as the hard spine of a tree. Sapwood is vital for the life of a tree, it contains more moisture, shrinks more when it is dried and is more susceptible to fungus than heartwood.

The beautiful shades of colours that make up the character of great pieces of furniture, massive doors or indoor cabinets are naturally etched on the wood during the conversion of sapwood into heartwood during the life of a tree. The strength and rich colors of heartwood are ideal characteristics for woodworking, and just as within the tree, heartwood forms the core of our woodworking projects.

WOODWORKING FUNDAMENTALS

Softwood and hardwood refers to groups of different species from which lumber is harvested for wood working. In general, softwoods are harvested from evergreen trees while hardwoods come from leafy trees.

The choice of wood for any given woodworking project depends on multiple factors; Will the wood be stained or painted? Is it an indoor or outdoor project? The decision rests on aesthetics, use and location. For example, poplar is a great choice for a painted finish since it is relatively inexpensive while oak or mahogany, which are more expensive, are wasted if painted since their rich character would be lost. Outdoor projects require moisture resistant woods such as cypress while indoor projects usually do not have to account for moisture. Cheaper and resilient, softwood varieties are used for construction. Wood such as mahogany, maple or oak are used best indoors, especially for furniture because of their rich shades of colors and durability.

Bottom line, all wood species have their peculiarities and we use them for our client’s advantage.
